What Does "Stay Virtuous" Really Mean?

You’ve probably heard me say it before:
Stay virtuous.

It’s what I call my retreat, it’s in my content, and it’s something I sign off with often. But the other night, someone asked me a great question:

“What does stay virtuous actually mean to you? Is it about virtue—like values and morality? Or is it virtuosity, like the CrossFit definition?”

And the answer is…
Yes. Both.

Let’s unpack it.

1. Virtue – Holding Strong to Your Values

On one level, “stay virtuous” is about your values—your personal compass. It’s about asking yourself:

  • Am I living in alignment with what I believe is right?

  • Am I being honest, kind, reliable, courageous?

  • Am I showing up with integrity even when no one’s watching?

Staying virtuous means checking in on who you are and who you’re becoming. It’s about being the kind of person your kids, your partner, your community can count on—not because you're perfect, but because you're trying. You’re revisiting your values. You’re adjusting. You’re growing.

2. Virtuosity – Doing the Common Uncommonly Well

In the CrossFit world, virtuosity means doing the basics with excellence. And I love that idea.

It’s not just for movement—it applies to coaching, parenting, and being human. It means;

  • Communicating with more clarity and care.

  • Showing up on time and with presence.

  • Mastering the fundamentals

  • Asking, “Can I do the small things a little better today?”

That mindset—of once we feel like we have a hang of things we revisit the basics and pay closer attention. This is what builds mastery over time. It’s humility in motion.

So, What Does Stay Virtuous Mean?

It means both:

  • Hold fast to your values.

  • Commit to doing the little things well.

Whether you’re coaching, in your home, or in a tough moment—stay virtuous is a reminder to lead with integrity and keep refining your craft, your character, and your impact.

It’s the long game. And it’s worth it.
